This is another game system by Leap Frog that is fun and educational. My kids have been growing up with Leap Frog products and I know first-hand that they work. The Leapster Explorer is recommended for children between the ages of 4 to 9. Leapster 1 and 2 games are NOT compatible. Another thing I like is that this is a touchscreen system. This would make an excellent holiday gift for a child in the appropriate age range on your list.
